My neighbor has chickens now, and he sells a dozen for $1.25!  I'm not sure if you need a permit or what to have them, but there are a few people in my neighborhood with chickens.  We aren't rural, but there is no home owners association.  As long as you don't have a noisy rooster, I don't think anyone cares.

Awesome!  We're currently raising four chicks for egg laying in our not-chicken-friendly town.  Two of our neighbors have them as well and haven't been harassed about it so I figured we would give it a shot.  They're almost old enough to move out to the coop.  It'll be a few months before they're ready to lay though.
