link between type 1 and celiac

I've recently been diagnosed with type 1, and had a celiac blood test (not sure which one though) at the same time which was negative.

Now reading more about celiac I'm getting DD tested this week as she has a lot of tummy issues that this would explain.

So I know that that there are links between the two conditions, but since my test was neg does that mean I could still develop it later? Also does my type 1 mean the kids are likely to inherit the tendency to lots of autoimmune stuff or just type 1.

Not that any of this is that important really I'm just interested but I seem to be reading all sorts of things..

I'm not T1 but my daughter is. Among her yearly bloodwork is a test for celiac. My understanding is that it can develop and including it in the yearly screen will help identify it. Unfortunately, it isn't just celiac - other autoimmune issues are more likely to pop up once you have one.

And, again this is with my understanding, the autoimmune issues do create a genetic predisposition. Meaning that your children would, genetically, have the pieces in place for the abnormal immune response that is triggered by some event into a disease/disorder. However, the predisposition doesn't mean it will happen - it just means that it could. It may trigger and it may be T1 but it might be something else entirely. So, in my opinion, your daughter having celiac would be an autoimmune response on her part, suggesting that her predisposition was triggered as well. Does that make any sense? Reading it over, I don't think it does...but I can't figure out another way to word it that sounds any clearer.

Thanks, that does make sense.

I've only been diagnosed 7 months so not yet got to the yearly blood tests, I'm still having lots which I think will get dropped when I'm considered more stable. I'll have to remember to ask next time what they all are.

I await DDs results with interest. There is definitely something going on with her and it would be good to find out what it is.

for your daughter, if it isn't celiac, it could still be a gluten intolerance (or milk intolerance, or any other food). If it's not celiac, maybe a food journal would help ferret out the cause. From what I understand, type 1 and celiac are carried on the same gene, but yes, one autoimmune disease predisposes you to another. A close friend of mine has two sons with type 1 and celiac (neither my friend or her husband have either). But my friend's niece has type 1 as well (no celiac), so there's definitely genetic components to all of it.
