Safe way to keep snails out of my garden?

I am a newbie gardener and just have a few plants to start with. Our backyard is like a snail resort, they are everywhere. I would like to safely keep them away from my plants with something that is also dog/cat friendly. Any suggestions?

Well, im not sure how pet friendly this one is....but i recall my mother setting out tins of beer at night...like in a shallow pie tin shaped plate  - apparently slugs loooove cheap beer!

At least I won't have to waste the good beer & it would keep our Jack Russell Terrier calm, lol!

I am right there with you on the snails and slugs :) They are everywhere here too. After many ravaged crops I was able to keep them in check this year with a combo of Sluggo (its iron and safe for organic gardening and pets) and crushed hazelnut shell mulch that I got at the farmers market. The beer traps are great but only work for slugs and only for small to medium slug problems - mine was too serious and I couldn't stay on top of the maintenance of refilling/collecting and some still got to my plants.

How much copper barrier would you be using? Could you lay down a copper wire around the perimeter and call it good or does it have to be bigger/thicker?

I really hate slugs...snails, too!

i have heard to lay crushed egg shells around your plants, because the snails can't get over them?
