I think the current minimal moderation is great. It allows members the freedom to express their opinions without fear of their thread being shut down or a warning issued. Discussions of all types should be permitted and the community should be allowed to respond with their opinions unrestricted. I feel there are some situations where heavy moderation may be necessary but these are very few (explain).

I do not like the minimal moderation and feel that it is leading to problems. To help protect the integrity of the forums and make the community a comfortable place to post we need the moderators to return to their previous moderation approach. They should oversee discussions more and remove things that are mean, snarky, sarcastic, and harassing. They should remove threads and posts that are against Mothering's parenting philosophies. Members who refuse to post appropriately should be moderated and those who persist in such behavior should be warned consistently and, if necessary, their membership removed.

If some of the areas were moved from support only, to open discussion, I will honestly, have no reason to stay at MDC. As my children grow, I don't need MDC as much as I used it, but I used to feel safe pointing family and friends to the site for support and questions. I no longer feel comfortable doing this...the atmosphere is too angry, to heated and too mean spirited.

I don't blame MDC for posters who choose to behave with very little civility, and who chose to attack others- but it does reflect poorly on them.

In general, I am thankful for the friends I made over the years but in its current form, MDC is not a place for me.

Thank you, Peggy, for publishing the apology that's appearing at the top of the page in the forums.

Yes, thank you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Peggy, and mothering admins, for listening to our concerns and posting the public apology. clap.gif

I'm glad to see the apology.

Not to be a crankypants, but I can't help but wonder: Why did it take so long?

Aeress, thank you for your sincerity and honesty. We agree with you and will be adjusting moderation a bit to put a stop to some of the uncivil and mean-spirited posting that is happening. Peggy, Adina, and I are discussing this with the moderation team and we hope it will start to feel more comfortable for most everyone over the next few weeks as we work more to do this. So I hope you will stick around. smile.gif

Peggy has been very busy with a few other matters that took her away from the boards. But she did write the apology and ask me to post it as an announcement. I asked for more specifics on where and how and again it took her a few days to get back to me because of other matters she had to attend to. When she did respond and asked me to place it as an announcement I found our platform character restriction would not allow the full text of what she had written. So I could not place it as she requested and I really didn't want to post it in some other way that might have made some feel that we were avoiding the announcement placement at the top of the site. But I finally decided that placing it as a page and using the announcement feature was good enough so I went ahead and placed it that way instead of waiting for her to approve it.

Has the announcement been taken down already?

I still see it at the top of the page.

No. It's set to display until mid-July I believe. But it is set to show only six times for a member. So once you have clicked through to six pages and it has displayed for you it will not display again.

I think it's based on your session so you can try clearing and see if it displays.

Six impressions of the announcement is the default that is placed if you don't set a specific number. Twelve impressions is the max. I've bumped it to twelve but I don't know if that will give six more impressions for members who have already browsed around MDC for more than six pages and now do not see it. But here's the announcement settings, for anyone questioning it and wanting verification.

No displaying 6 times makes sense, because I did my forum hopping. But I was hoping to actually reread it so greensad.gif.

It's here: http://mothering.com/mothering-community

I'm looking at other more long-term ways of displaying it so please bear with me. smile.gif

Ah, that's why it disappeared!  I appreciate Peggy's note.  What's the point of not letting it be seen permanently?  Why does it disappear after I've gone on to read other pages?  I'd like to read it again.

Clear what?

I mean this completely sincerely-  thank you Cynthia.

Edited to add, cross posted with the above.  Again, thanks.

The apology is a great start!  I look forward to seeing it linked in a more permanent way on the main forums page and on FB.  Are there any other ideas being discussed about how to move forward with this?  Maybe linking to an organization that combats hate crimes or something along those lines?

It's now on the community homepage. That's the only way I can place it as a static announcement. The main forums page announcement will remain for one month but once it has displayed to you 12 times it will end the display rotation for you personally. That's not something I can change.

Yes, we have talked about things to do to move forward. Once we have something more to share we'll post it. smile.gif
