My almost three year old and I have a problem. Â Lately he's been having huge, massive, scream so long he has no idea why he's even mad fits. Twice he has passed out from exhaustion which ruins bedtime. Â These are usually over things that I can't change. For example, once his banana broke into two pieces while he peeled it. One was because he wanted my mom to unbuckle his carseat -- but we had just dropped her off and she wasn't even with us. Â
I'm pretty good at heading them off -- I can word things so he understands, or act playfully if I know we're headed toward danger. I'm pretty aware of his needs and I'm very accommodating, but these tend to sneak up on me. Â What I DON'T know is what to do once the fit has begun. He rejects everything I'm offering (water, distractions, hugs) but if I try to ignore him he follows me around the house, pulling on my clothes. Â He calls me Honey instead of Mommy and he'll scream "Honey! Help me! Hug!" but if I touch him he kicks/hits/pushes me away. My heart hurts for him and I have no idea what to do once he's that upset. Honestly, I have a hard time keeping myself composed.Â
He doesn't normally nap and hasn't for months, and he's getting enough sleep at night. I don't think it a sleep issue. Â He is getting his molars so I'm sure that isn't helping, but it's too much.Â
Any advice, please?
