alternative shampoos

Thread Starter

I'm ready to make the switch to no-poo... But I'm not sure I'm quite ready yet for "just" baking soda and vinegar. Anyone here use either Naturoli or Dr. Bronner's for shampoo? Any opinions on either of these, or any other shampoo bars?

Also- are any of these gentle enough for baby? Right now we're between California Baby and Babyganics... I love having a sweet smelling little munchkin right out of the bath, because within minutes of waking up he's all sour milk and banana and babysweat :) But trying to cut down on all the chemicals and everything.

Thanks!

I did the baking soda for awhile but got tired of it and switched to a shampoo bar. Love it! Here's a link - http://www.leafa.com/soapshop.htm - you'll need to scroll down to see the shampoo one. I buy it at a local store but ordered from this company until I found it locally. Sold with no wrappings, which I love - it's a no waste product!

I use lime juice as a conditioner. Used ACV for years but recently converted and am very happy with lime juice.

I'm no expert because I just made the switch like 2 weeks ago, but you should give the baking soda/vinegar thing a try if you're thinking of making the switch anyway. I've been really happy with the results so far, even though I've heard there's a transition period. I've scented my "shampoo" with a few drops of lavender oil & the "conditioner" with cinnamon & vanilla. It's a bit of a pain to get used to (so different! & you have to mix it up almost each time)... especially a pain when my DS found the box of baking soda & decided to "cook" with it all in his play kitchen this morning (!)... managed to salvage enough to wash today but will have to run out for more soon. Otherwise, I'm getting used to it & actually like it quite a bit.

I make "shampoo" out of dr. bronners. Here's the recipe:

3 oz dr. bronners

8 oz water, or herbal infusion of your choice (I like to use green tea)

1/4 tsp jojoba oil

25 drops essential oil of your choice

Make sure to shake it before every use as the ingredients will separate. Also, it's going to be liquid, not gel like a regular shampoo, so it's easiest to squirt it directly onto your head, not into your hand.I like to follow it with an ACV rinse.

Hope that helps!

After a few years of buying shampoo bars, one day I decided to try my homemade lard soap bar on my hair, and found it works just as well for both DH (who has long curly hair) and me. I'm super pleased, because the soap costs almost nothing to make, and I can give it whatever scent I want, and I know exactly what is in it (lard, essential oils, lye).
