Santa Fe?

Thread Starter

Hello.

My husband and I are considering moving to Santa Fe from NYC with our almost two year old son and wanted to connect with and get feedback from those who know it well.

We pursue a peaceful, natural/attached approach to parenting. Our son was born peacefully at home. We practice elimination communication (and our son is now happily potty independent).  We support and see the value in uninterrupted free play.  We are inspired by Naomi Aldort and Scott Noelle among others.  We are interested in connecting with parents who are like-minded in these regards.

If this resonates, please share your thoughts about life in Santa Fe.

Thanks!

Wait, are you sure you don't already live here? You've just described the vast majority of our friends. We also did EC, and loved it, and there are lots of non-judgemental free-thinking un-schooling etc etc folks in SFe.

I'm from NY so I also appreciate the shift you'd be making if you come out here. If you have any specific Qs, feel free to pm me. It's certainly the case that you'd find like-minded parents here.

Hey there!  My husband and I are moving to Santa Fe from DC in a few weeks. We are expecting our first baby this June!

It's great to hear that there are a lot of EC transplants who are of a similar mindset. I can't wait for the move!

I'm curious about options for birthing. I'd love to hear your opinions on the local options (midwives, homebirths, birthing centers, hospitals, etc)

Thanks!

So funny, I just posted on the previous post about living in SF.  I grew up in the burbs of DC, then lived in Bklyn for 5years, then moved here.  LCBMAX is right, the original post is completely in line with most of the families I know around here.

TreeGreen, there are several good midwives practicing in SF and there are birthing centers in Alb and Taos.  I ended up transferring to the hospital with my DS and most of my nurses there were nurse-midwives or had home births themselves.  They were both sympathetic and supportive of us (they didn't even ask about circ or vacs knowing that we had planned a homebirth), and mostly left us alone other than ooohing and ahhhing over our DS.  There are also doulas galore, "Birthing from Within" classes, LLL meetings, Many Mothers, Books and Babies, Mommy Meet Ups, and on and on...  Maybe I am just at the right age to notice, but SF seems REALLY baby/child friendly to me.  Lots to do!

Let me know if I can help in any way!  And welcome!

I live in ABQ now but I grew up in Santa Fe. I found it to be an amazing place to grow and explore. Sometimes the community can be a little disjointed but if you work at it and get involved you can find a great niche. The owner of indigo baby has la leche league meetings and other things going on. It's great to be outdoors and go to fiesta, indian market, and it's hard to run out of things to do in New Mexico if you open up to the possiblities.
