Best Loom for a 9 year old (who is new to fiber arts)...OR crochet?

My DC has been doing weaving in math class this year and has taken a liking to yarn crafts.  She is asking about either a loom or learning to crochet.  I like the idea of getting her a proper loom (they used a piece of cardboard in class).  Can anyone recommend a loom appropriate for a 9 year old that doesn't cost too much $$.   Or, would you recommend crochet instead.  Thanks!

The Cricket is a great loom. I think it costs about $149 CDN, maybe a little less in the USA.

It is sturdy and easy to use. I can weave a scarf on mine in 3 hours from beginning to end. You can also make placemats, coasters, purses, etc with them. The loom is only about 10" wide but you can sew strips of woven cloth together to make something wider.

Learning to crochet would be much less expensive. Maybe let her look at some finished weaving and crochet projects and see what appeals to her most. Ravelry.com is a great resource for people just getting into yarn crafts.
