I'm hoping there's an IBCLC out there (our ultra-experienced LLL leader).
I have been nursing my 15-month old since she was nearly 4 weeks (took her a bit to latch). The first time she latched, with the IBCLC assisting, I had to use labor breathing techniques because the pain was so bad. It was determined that my daughter had a good latch and no tongue-tie. The LC asked if I had sensitive nipples (maybe? My DH answered that I did- as if he's the expert. Lol). She handed me a nipple shield and said I'd be able to nurse without it after getting used to nursing.
I still have to use the shield, and I go through cycles where it's almost unbearable to nurse. Oddly, it's always on the left breast. My right side is fine, with or without shield. I've had our LLL leaders check latch and look for tongue tie. Everything is fine. I don't have thrush, dry nipples, milk blisters...anything that would typically cause pain.
Has anyone experienced this? Is it really just that I'm sensitive? Will I have to do this with all future children?
