Had a random discussion with my midwife yesterday. We were discussing encapsulating my placenta. She'd heard of it, but never had a client who'd done it; but several weeks ago I got the results of a ferritin test back, and my records showed that I had a HUGE leap in blood ferritin six weeks after I gave birth to DD (a few years ago). She said "Wow, what were you taking?" and it took me a moment to figure it out, because I knew I wasn't on iron supplements at the time; but we eventually figured out it was probably the placenta. So now she's a huge fan of the idea, and kept bugging me to get DH to hurry up and encapsulate DS's placenta (he was born five days ago).

So anyhoo. We were chatting about it yesterday, and she said "You know, I have some JW clients and they don't do blood transfusions, so I wonder if I should suggest the placenta to them as a good way to boost their iron levels postpartum?". And it got me wondering. The placenta is technically the baby's, not the mothers; so what's the religious stance on consuming it? I assume a mother wouldn't be allowed to eat it in a "whole" form (or would she?); but would encapsulation be OK? My MW didn't know, but then she's not JW.

Just curious!
