Dr. Bob- Question regarding whether or not to vaccinate (runny nose)

Hi Dr. Bob,

I'm so glad to see you on this site (I use to visit your vaccine forum often before it was shut down). My little one is due for a well visit and has been selectively vaccinated in the past due to a reaction at two months to Pentacel. The past week there's been both nasal congestion and a runny nose and I have noticed yellow/green mucus several times. A few weeks ago my little one had similiar symptoms but it cleared up after a few days so that time I'm not sure if it was possibly due to allergies (that time mucus was clear). What do you recommend to your patients when they have similiar symptoms? Should they be symptom free for a certain period of time before you vaccinate? Due to the history of the reaction is it too risky to vaccinate (was only contemplating one vaccine) with these symptoms?

Thanks so much for your time.

I think a child should be well for about a week before vaccinating. For congestion like this, I like Sinupret (www.SinupretForKids.com

Thanks Dr. Sears for your reply. Today I noticed a small ring like circle on my little one's leg. I'm wondering if it's ringworm.I read that it could take several weeks before it clears? Do you have any recommendations regarding this and vaccinating? Should I also wait a week after it clears as you recommended for the congestion/runny nose?

Thanks again. :-)

no, i don't think ringworm is a reason to delay vaccines

Hi Dr. Bob- Thanks again for your reply. The "ring" was gone this morning so I'm guessing that it wasn't ringworm or if it was it cleared remarkably fast! My little one's runny nose and congestion was also better today. In light of no other symptoms except for the runny nose and congestion for a week would you still suggest waiting a week before vaccinating? I still can't distinguish the cause of the symptoms, wasn't sure if it was allergies but guessing from the mucus color at times (yellow/green) I'm thinking that it was possibly more than that. Foolish question but is it possible to have a cold/virus with only a runny/congested nose as symptoms?

(adding another question (sorry). I read your book and have a question regarding vitamin A. I give a multivitamin. Do you feel the amounts given in multivitamins are appropriate? My little one has never had fish plus I'm concerned after reading that it could be toxic so don't know if I should give any additional amount.)

Thank you again so much. I really appreciate your time and advice.

yes, a cold could just give runny nose and congestion.  As for Vitamin A, I'd go based on the doses I put in the book.  I don't know if the amount in a multi is enough
