falling baby - put my mind at ease please!

Hello all,

I am new to the group and really enjoyed reading the posts here.

I have an 8 moth old (today exactly!) that craws. He does not have the best balance and can't quite sit up on his own. Despite all this he keeps moving around and reaching for the ceiling, which tips him over and he hits his head. Well after some terrible mother guilt - that I let my kid bang his head all the time-  I got over it, thinking the distance is not that great and he does not cry.

WELL, today he was on his knees leaning over and holding on to a lamp with one arm. When I got to him he tried to grab on to me and there he goes....in the complete opposite direction flat on his back and boncked his head. THIS time he cried. I never thought he would tip over especially since he was leaning FORWARD.

Hubby keeps telling me I will burn out if I stress so much - and hes right. Help me stop ladies! I can't seem to on my own. I worry about him, even if everything seems ok. He is only 8 months, if I keep doing this I will be a wreck by the time he's one. :(

Hmm... well is it hardwood or carpet?  If it's hard, can you get a cheap rug for the areas he is in alot?  And if there are heavy things that could tip over and hurt him, can you move them out of the way or out of reach for a while?  And maybe some general baby proofing on things like hard stone hearths.

And the other thing that helped me was that I convinced myself DD would learn to balance better and be more cautious if I just let her have her falls.  She's pretty steady on her feet now at 2 years... who can really say if one has anything to do with the other but it helped me!

One time, we had this swivel chair that was my comfy sewing chair, and my DD fell on on of the metal feet parts somehow with the back of her skulland I though, "OMG why didn't we curb this chair!  She is dead!"  But she was fine.  :)  We did curb the chair though.

But if he is falling from a crawl or even standing?  He should really be fine unless he is falling on sharp things or giant rocks.  Babies are practically made to fall from those heights.

My son turned 8 months yesterday!

We are going through the same thing here. Ds falls daily. Literally. He is crawling and loves to pull himself up on anything and everything. Sometimes he makes it, sometimes not. I get a little freaked, too, but honestly I don't think humans would be so successful as a species if babies weren't built to withstand a few months worth of head bonks.

Assuming he's not falling onto sharp objects or falling off of higher surfaces, I'm sure your little one will be just fine ;)

No, hes not falling on anything "hard" thought our carpeted floor is still prob hard if you tip over and fall flat :(
