My 3 Year Old's Unrelenting Tummy Ache... Dairy?

My poor daughter has had intense tummy aches for the past two weeks, all day, every day. She has had tummy aches for over a year but it seems to have intensified recently. She even wakes up crying in the middle of the night saying her tummy hurts. She has no other symptoms. She has regular and solid BMs. She does not strain when going to the bathroom. We eat a well balanced vegetarian diet which includes dairy. She eats a good amount of probiotics including yogurt and kombucha. She does have some dry skin (maybe eczema?) on the bridge of her nose which may be related? 

 

I took her to the doc who ruled out abdominal obstruction, appendicitis, uti and diabetes. Since my husband and I both had some dairy issues as children, she recommended eliminating dairy for a week or so to see if it improves. Our chiropractor also thought it might be dairy.

 

I have done some reading online about lactose intolerance or milk allergy. I suppose she could have either one of these, although she doesn't show most of the related symptoms. I also read that in young children it is usually an allergy that they outgrow by age 5. It sounds like lactose intolerance is rare in young children. I am a bit confused since my brother and I were both diagnosed as lactose intolerant as children and grew out of it around age five. My brother and I were successfully treated with lactase drops and pills.

 

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can determine if this is lactose intolerance or an allergy. Is goat's milk okay? Or do I have to go entirely soy and coconut milk? What about lactase drops? My mom used to treat our dairy products with these drops when I was a kid and it seemed to help.

 

My daughter loves her yogurt, cheese and milk so this is going to be a really hard shift in our home. If I can cleanse her system for a few weeks can I slowly introduce small amounts? I just don't know how to go about this whole thing.

 

And of course... there is always the possibility that we eliminate dairy from our lives only to discover that it isn't a dairy issue at all... Uggg. I wish there was a way we could get a definitive diagnosis.

I would definitely eliminate dairy just to see. I know its hard to do - my DD was having dairy multiple times a day (I was surprised at how much of her diet contained dairy). DD loves the chocolate coconut milk.
