Can you provide a link please? This goes against everything I know about CP and about the vaccine ~ and it doesn't really explain the rise in shingles cases (and the need for shingles vaccine) since the introduction of the CP vax.
I can provide several other links if need be ~ but I am perplexed by this position. I think it is fairly widely known that the CP vax caused the rise in shingles cases due to lack of natural boosting to those of us who had CP as children...thus the reason a shingles vax is now needed.
The first person is right, and you are also partially right.
The way you get shingles is to have been exposed to the chicken pox virus previously and have it still living dormant in your body. If you have the vaccination and fight off the virus right away they you may never have it living in your body (and not get CP or shingles), or if you are never exposed to CP, because a vaccination program has reduced the likelihood of it circulating in the population you will never get CP or shingles.
CP vaccination increases shingles in people who already have had CP (not those who get the vaccination). As you state, they reduce the "natural" immunisation of people to the CP virus by reducing the amount of it circulating in the population. This natural exposure in people with the CP virus living dormant in their bodies helps their immune system keep in practice and keep the CP virus down - without it the virus can break out and become shingles. The solution to the lack of natural CP circulating is a shingles vaccination to give a booster to the person's immunity.
Eventually if the CP vaccine is widespread enough - there will be no CP circulating in the population, no one will get CP as a child, and none of those children will get shingles. Then the vaccination program can end.
