Wow, I can't believe how many people are against large families! I'm the oldest of five sisters (one stillborn) and people were constantly asking my dad if he was trying for a boy, like that was the only reason they'd keep having kids!
We're expecting #3. We'd planned to stop at 2, but I always wanted 4, so I was thrilled that we are having this one . . . now I have an excuse to have my fourth, lol. I wrote my parents to tell them and knew that they might not be pleased with another grandchild being born so far away from them, so I put "Good news!" in the subject line and they both wrote back how happy they were for us. :) On the other hand, my husband told his mom a bit sheepishly, "uh, well, it looks like we should have been more careful . . . " and she is all over us about how bad an idea it is to have another (she was against us having #2 but she has 7 kids). It definitely helps to put a positive spin on things.
As for the congrats, I always tell everyone congratulations when they say they're expecting, even if they seem to be a bit unhappy about it, because A) a baby is an awesome thing and B) even if they are feeling wishy washy about it in the beginning, I think most parents are head over heels when their little one arrives and then they'll remember who said "Oh no!" and who said, "That's great!"
