PP bleeding and more TMI question...

I'm 5 weeks PP, I've been bleeding on and off, and in the last week or so have been getting cramping on occasion during the day (painful enough that I use a heating pad, but not severe).  Bleeding isn't severe either, but still bright red and period like, and today I had brown gooey stuff (sorry TMI!), it was NOT just brown blood, it was like thick gooey string...I thought maybe retained placenta?  Anyone know if this sounds normal?

Bleeding would still be in the realm of normal, and the brown stuff could have been an old clot...but the cramping would concern me, I think.  At all my postpartum appointments, my midwife asked me if I was having any cramping.  Might be worth a trip to see your care provider just for peace of mind (and relief, I hope!).

I'll go in next week for my 6 week PP check-up and mention the cramping, I'm noticing a pattern of getting it mostly at night, I guess it could just still be my uterus getting back to size.
