I should know this after 5 babies (3 UC), but am looking for a bit more info.... The placenta was intact (nothing retained) as far as I could tell, but it seemed like clots were easily falling off the maternal side and when I picked it up was hard to keep together (i.e. my fingers could just about pull it apart). Â I think there was calcification to some degree as I noticed grey areas, not a uniform burgundy/red. Â Would calcification cause it to "disintegrate"? Â It also did not separate from the uterus right away and took a little over 2 hrs to be birthed (normal for me and no cause to be worried).
Â
What (if any) is the average size of the placenta? Â Does it depend on the size of the baby? (Sorry for the simplistic ?'s--let's just sum it up to post partum brain)
Â
My other questions are in regards to consuming the placenta. Â How long will a placenta last in the fridge before it needs to be frozen or dehydrated? I was thinking 2-3 days...If I was to only have a few fresh smoothies in the first few days will it still be beneficial for post partum depression or just for initial energy/nutrients?Â
Â
Thoughts, links, and such greatly appreciated.
