Fort Wayne Indiana neighborhoods

Hi, we're thinking about moving to Fort Wayne with our three little ones, as my husband has family there. 

Can anyone tell me about the Southwood Park, Oakdale, Harrison Hill, Forest Park/Lakeside neighborhoods? Hubby's relations say their crime-ridden and a bad investment. Really? I'd like a big old house on a big lot as we are homeschoolers and we need room! Plus we would like a garden. I am drawn to these vintage-style homes.

Oh and we are secular homeschoolers, waldorf-inspired. Would we ever be able to find our niche there? You know, find a group of like-minded homeschoolers?

Do you like living in Fort Wayne. Fun things for the kids to do? 

Ideally, we'd like a big old home on acres. Does that exist there?

I know people that live in those areas an they LOVE their homes. The south side does get a bad rap; there are a lot of violent crimes just a few miles away, but those neighborhoods are fine. The lakeside area is nice, the only thing I would look for are area sex offenders.

If you want a older home with acreage you may need to look at the smaller towns outside of Ft. Wayne or on the outskirts.

Overall, the city is safe. Very low cost of living, lots of nice parks, zoo, and other activities make it a nice place to raise kids.

We lived on the SW side of town because of the wonderful school system, but if I had been HS I would not have hesitated to look into the Forest Park area.

I also wanted to mention that there are a lot of homeschooler and a variety homeschool groups. Many of the groups I came across were religious, though one said they accept any faith. There was talk of a family starting a Waldorf summer school, but I am not sure what happened with that. Look for Fort Wayne Holistic Living on Facebook (and maybe Yahoo Groups), there are a lot of nice like minded mamas in that group.
