8 weeks pp and coffee?

Is anyone else consuming caffeine? I never did while nursing my first but this time I find myself taking sips of dh's coffee and today I treated myself to a really small quarter cup of iced coffee. Am I going to regret this tonight? :)

Did you drink caffeine while pregnant? If so, maybe your kiddo is used to it?

 

I drank coffee when pregnant with DS. I used to drink about 3 cups every morning, went down to 1 when I was pregnant. I still have my one every morning with him now, even though we're nursing. I guess I can't say whether it keeps him up more, since I've never NOT drunk it. :) But I will say that he doesn't seem any more or any less fussy than other babies I've met.

 

My theory, which is totally in my brain and not backed by anything Ive read (so take with a grain of salt), is that if he was used to 1 cup a day in the womb, he can handle 1 cup a day while nursing. Otherwise maybe he would experience withdrawal, like I would if I suddenly stopped?

 

Again, that's just my rationalization, don't know if it's backed by any hard science. :) I would say sips are probably just fine!

I am 5.5 weeks postpartum with my first baby and just started drinking coffee at 4.5 weeks pp.  i wasnt planning on starting to take caffeine this soon, and i didnt have any during pregnancy.  i did consume a cup of decaf every now and then, though.  i was worried that a small cup of coffee would make baby stay awake a ton more, but just took the chance one morning and it has really made no difference.  that said, i am truly drinking 1 cup, no more.  and i make it strong.  i didnt do it every day at first, but have had coffee every day for the last 4 days, now.  it is my morning treat and im loving it, just makin sure that it really is the only caffeine i take in.

id say, start small and see how baby handles it.

I have reintroduced coffee.  For about a week or so, I was having one every morning, but we ran out of cream so it's been back to occasional use again (till we remember to buy more cream, LOL!).

 

It's hard to really know if it has an effect, cause there are so many variables in a day, kwim?  But the mornings that I brewed my own large cup, she seemed maybe a little less likely to nap well during that day.  So I scaled back to 1/2 caf, 1/2 decaf and that seems fine (I use a big cup, so one is more like 2, really).  And if I'm having coffee later in the day, I drink 100% decaf, just to be safe.  I don't really miss the caffeine and really, it's probably good for me to stay that way, LOL!

I tried coffee at 2 weeks PP and wasn't optimistic since DS was highly sensitive to it. DD ended up being the same way. I can handle drinking about a cup and a half of decaf but no more. She can't even handle more than that of just decaf coffee which still has a miniscule amount of caffeine in it. I guess I'm in the minority that can't have any caffeine, even chocolate while breastfeeding!

DS2 was like that with even decaf coffee, chocolate as well.  I kind of wonder if it's not the caffeine at all in that case, but rather something else.  TMI.....My pee smells different after I drink a coffee, so it's getting something in my bloodstream, kwim?

Just to be safe I bought some decaf today. Having iced coffee in the summer just feels like the biggest treat in the world, and I deserve it. :)

When I found out I was pregnant, I cut coffee cold turkey. Then in my 3rd trimester, I would have a half cup about 3 times a week.

Now that I am EBF, I drink 2-3 cups a day.whistling.gif My LO doesn't seem to have any adverse effects...and idk what i'd do without it!
