Knitting fork or knitting dolly for 4 year old?

I'm thinking of getting a knitting fork for dd1's 4th birthday.  I'm not a knitter, and I don't know how fun this would be for her.  Is it fun to make long chains of yarn?  She has good concentration and fine motor skills....but do long chains get really boring quickly?

Also, can you make your own knitting fork? I showed dh a photo online and he says he thinks he could, but what are the dimensions?

I haven't seen the fork before, I  may have to have a go at making one.

DD has one of the french knitting dolls, to be honest she really doesn't use it much. She got it around 4 1/2 and even with pretty good fine motor skills she got frustrated with it easily. I think a lot of that may well be the cheep yarn which came with it and split very easily. I don't think she had much interest in the end product either.

When she was 5 1/2 she got some kids knitting needles and a book for Chiristmas, that seems to have gone down a lot better.

This is the book http://www.amazon.com/Kids-Learn-Knit-Lucinda-Guy/dp/1570763356/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1309952693&sr=1-7

There are several soft toys, pretty much rectangles folded over with some felt features sewn on. However she seems much more interested in trying to create herself an owl.
