Hi mamas,

I have a question for my sister.  Her first baby is 12 days old today and she has had such a hard time breastfeeding...cracked, sore nipples...in excruciating pain.  Her latch hasn't been deep enough...I had this problem with my DS2...we just kept at it and he eventually started taking more breast into his mouth and my nipples healed within the first 2 wks...I was hoping this would be the case with my sister.  As of yesterday, she said it was getting better every day (YAY!), then she sent me a text tonight that asked if I ever had a problem with my nipples not staying hard, which I figured out meant that they weren't sticking out (that's what flat nipples are, right?).  She said this problem just started today.  Has anyone ever experienced this?  Does it last long?  When I got to thinking about it, I vaguely remember this happening to me before with one of my nurslings but I don't remember anything besides what my nipples looked like when this happened, so it must not have lasted too long or caused too many problems.

So far all she's read is that a nipple shield might help or to pump before she nurses (which she said won't work because her DD goes from asleep to inconsolable in like 5 seconds)  She can make another appt with an LC, but it's hard to get in the same day...she's not aware of any walk-in breastfeeding clinics.  I sent her the info about her local LLL group.

TIA for any advice!!

Kate :)
