Annoying Moving Ad

Hi There,

As you can see, I have not posted often.  I come to Mothering for answers to my questions and am happy that I can find like minded moms here to learn from.  Thank you for that ladies!  I do not go to any other parenting websites and miss the old forum format.

My reason for posting today is the annoying moving ads from JC Penney that keep moving the thread posts while I am reading them which causes me to lose my place.  Very frustrated and hard to focus on what I am reading with this happening.  Can these ads please stop moving?  I can't believe how many ads there are on MDC now.  Its a mainstream technique and now department stores are being pushed on us?  It's not the sort of environment that I want to be in.  Oh, yeah a pop up survery came on the screen too when I navigated to this forum.  Arghh.  At the very least please stop the moving JC Penney ad.

Thanks.

I'll report the ad to our tech team and see if there is a conflict that can be addressed to resolve the issue for you. can you tell me what OS version and browser and version you are using? It could be specific to your computer's software so that info would help.

You can view the forum with no ads by becoming a Supporter member.  You'll find more info here: http://www.mothering.com/community/wiki/paid-subscriptions

Thank you Cynthia.  I am using Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and Safari browser version 5.0.5.

I did a quick search before posting to see if anyone else had experienced this moving ad moving the thread posts, but did not find any posts.  The ad moves up and down on the right side of my screen and when it moves it narrows the width of the post that it is next to then when it moves before I can finish reading the post the post becomes wide again.  The posts are also moving up and down some when this happens.  I think it may have some relationship to the length of the thread posts as it only seems to be happening when the posts are next to the ad.  If the thread is new (like this one) the posts are not yet down the page next to the ad so I don't have that problem.  I hope this makes some sense.

Thanks for the info. I reported your thread to our ad team so they can look into it. :)

Hi Cynthia,  I think the reason the posts in the threads are moving is because the "announcements" above the "tags" and "reviews" vary in length, so each time they change the reviews and the ad below the reviews moves up and down based on the length of the "announcements" (my own description, as this area has not title).  I hope that makes sense and can help solve the problem.

Thanks happy*mama. If that is the reason then the problem should resolve after several views of the announcement. Our announcement system is set for a maximum of 12 views by a member. After 12 views it will not display again. So hopefully it is no longer an issue for you. If it is then it might be the ad you mentioned. Our tech team is looking into it. smile.gif

Ok, thank you for the info.  Is that 12 views in each post or ?  I wonder if that is the cause, as I don't seem to be having that problem now.  I went back to view the two threads where I had that problem and could not duplicate the moving posts issue.  smile.gif

12 views would include any page that carries the announcement banner.

Ok, so I am having the problem again.  I just started reading the "CIO in the car and I HATE IT!!!" thread and the posts next to and immediately below the last ad on the right hand side of the page are moving up and down and I am having a hard time keeping my place.  I'm guessing this may be related to my screen size?

Oh, and the "announcements" I had previously referred to is where the "MDC User Agreement" info, etc. is posted on the right side of the screen.  And I have seen this on every thread page regardless of the number of times I have viewed it.  Apparently I am the only person having the issue with the moving posts.

Would you please check again now and let me know if the problem is resolved? I think character count of that message has caused problems in the past. I've made a few adjustments so I'm hoping that resolves it for you.

Hi Cynthia,  I think this may have resolved this issue as I there seems to be no more up and down movement from the message which seemed to be causing the posts to move.  Thanks for taking the time to fix this, I know it wasn't a big deal, but still was an annoyance.  I'll let you know if I have the problem again.  smile.gif

Not a problem at all. Thanks for letting me know. :)
