Prenatals and Vitamins in general.

So I found out yesterday that I am pregnant again and am thinking about prenatal vitamins. I just started a traditional food diet a few months ago and am still learning.

What kind a vitamins would you recommend? I try to get as balanced as I can but it doesn't always work out that way. With my DD (18mths) I was taking Trader Joe's Prenatals but found myself peeing most of them away.

TIA

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

I would definitely look into the book, "Real food for mother and baby" by Nina Planck.  She has some great recommendations for real food based supplements if they are needed.  You can certainly rely on foods for where your strong points are and supplement where you are concerned.  Most prenatals contain a lot of synthetic vitamins that your body doesn't use as well, and you pee most of them out.  Food is much more efficient.

I've used both Dr. Ron's Multi and New Chapter Organics Perfect Prenatal.  I like the New Chapter more than Dr. Ron's (I just feel that I absorb it better), but I also supplement with Dr. Ron's Cal-Mag and Organ Delight.  I also take fermented cod liver oil.  New Chapter has real folate and 100% of the vitamin A is from beta carotene, so I have no concern about getting "too much" vitamin A (since the risks of too much vitamin A are associated with synthetic versions).

My basic plan this pregnancy has been:

4 mL FCLO

1 tsp high vitamin butter oil

Full dose of the prenatal

4 Cal-Mags (this really keeps the leg cramps at bay - when I don't take it I get cramps the next morning!)

3 Organ Delights

Thanks! I read her "Real Food" book a few months ago but I'll pick this one up at the library tomorrow.

I ended up starting with New Chapter which seem to be working much much better then the Trader Joe's ones I used in my last pregnancy. We'll see how things go. They def. do not bother my stomach which is a very good thing. I bought the Whole Foods brand of Cod Liver oil caps and they bother my stomach.

I took the Vitamin Code Raw prenatal. It is raw and food based...all of the vitamins are bioavailable!! I felt really great when I took it.
