Labor experience with doula or Midwife hired as doula?

Hi everyone.  I'm pretty new on here but have already come to love and appreciate all of you and the great advice and support I have received simply by reading your experiences.  It is always nice to know you are not alone or maybe educate yourself on a viewpoint different than your own  (Please excuse my mushy moment of gratitude, just had to be said).

That being said maybe you all can help me out...

I will be a VBAC mom in Metro Detroit who was is planning on delivering in the hospital but is becoming increasingly scared on what that experience may/will be (the culture is not very natural birth friendly and I am always being reminded I can schedule a RCS "no problem").  I cannot afford a homebirth with a midwife, however I know I will have the support of a doula/BP just have not found the right person yet.  My question is...

in anyone's experience, are there any doulas/montrices out there who were willing to labor at home with you until the latest possible time (I'm talking close to right before wanting to push)?  

or

has anyone had experience hiring a midwife as a doula with the understanding the actual delivery would occur in the hospital?

I appreciate any response or referral.

I should add that I live 3 miles from the hospital and while I don't like the culture of the hospital, with the right support I have no problem delivering there.  I just figure the closer I am to actual delivery the less time available for hospital intervention that I do not want.  With my first pregnancy I made the mistake of going into the hospital the minute my water broke even though I was barely in labor because that is what I was told I "had to do" by my OB at the time.  I feel simply because of this my husband and I fought every step of the way to have the most natural childbirth and would lose battle after battle on even the most simplest of things. In the end I ended up with a C/S which I have to believe was best for my child but after educating myself and hearing from so many women in similar positions as mine in the back of my head I will always wonder was this C/S necessary.  I just want to be as educated, supported and empowered as I can be this time around.  I'm sorry for the rant, just wanted you all to know where a little where I was coming from.
