An article in yesterday's Santa Barbara Independent was a breath of fresh air. It didn't slam parents who avoid circumcision or those who choose it. It calmly explained that US circumcision rates have come down a lot, particularly in the West.
My favorite two parts were how handily the author's husband dismissed the locker room/look like dad myth (hey, moms just want to be sure they "get it" about their guys; they're not trying to create angst) and the inevitable Jr High discussion about who is and who isn't that happens when one of the boys (or girls) learns what circumcision is. It certainly happened in my school, and to my surprise it was considered "cooler" not to be, even if it definitely wasn't the norm. Goes to show that kids instinctively know circumcision is wrong... we just have to keep reinforcing that.
I pray that articles like this are the trend.
