Hi!
I need your opinions on this situation. My 3 year old son had severe diarrhea for about 5 days and it did end up bloody so we went to the ER. They prescribed an antibiotic and took a sample to culture.
He started improving quickly so I didn't start the antibiotic without knowing what was going on. The ER then called saying the culture showed shigella and that we should continue taking the antibiotic.
His pedi then called the next day when he was pretty much fine and so I told the nurse we had not started the antibiotic b/c she wanted us to come it to retest the stool after we finished it. She said the dr really wanted him to take it, even if he didn't have any more diarrhea.
The antibiotic they prescribed is Bactrim, which as they all are is scary to give.
So I am trying to find out if Shigella will pass through his system without it, or if he will continue to have the bacteria chronically if I don't give this to him.
Thank you in advance for any info you can give!!!
