Need a book/gift recommendation for a 4 yo boy

DS is going to a new friend's birthday party and we need a gift. I have NO idea what this family is like. The kids go to preschool together, but DS can't tell me anything about this boy in terms of what they play together, what he's like, etc. I have only met the mom once or twice in passing, and when I RSVPed for the party, I asked what he would like. She answered that books are good, but didn't elaborate.

DS loves all kinds of books, and I'm just not sure what to get a 4-year-old. It seems like at this point, the kid would have every Dr. Seuss book imaginable (or maybe that's just us!). Any ideas?

What about a Robert Munsch book.  They're usually popular with that age.

Another pretty safe bet gift for a kid that age is craft supplies (maybe a set of water colours and a pad of paper?).

Elephant and Piggie books are popular with my 4yo and his friends

Magic School Bus is *loved* by all the kids at ds's preschool, is is crazy how much they want teachers and parents to read these books!

Skippyjon Jones is good too.  They sometimes have audio cds in them, which is a nice addition.

Frog and Toad

Little Bear

Art supplies are great. Books are also good. My son loves Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs, most Daniel Pinkwater, most Munsch, most Elephant and Piggie,

Kate DiCamillo's books about Mercy Watson are great.

Stomp rockets are always a big hit.
