No Vac / Non Vax moms - need help with travel

Hi Mamas,

I'm very new to Mothering forums although I've subscribed to the magazine for the last couple of years.

DD will celebrate her 3rd birthday next month and hasn't been vaccinated for anything yet. We're planning a trip to Asia (India, in particular) probably towards the end of the year. We're thinking about vaccinations for her before our trip. Was wondering if any of the mamas here have any pointers on the diseases themselves, available vaccines or anything that could be of help.

When I look at some of the diseases endemic to the region, I can think of many mosquito related diseases (dengue, malaria, chikungunya), polio and Tuberculosis (TB). We're not looking to vaccinate against mosquito related ones and when we looked for polio statistics, we found that there are only a handful of cases in the entire country.

At this point, I'm just mulling over everything. We'll meet with our crunchy ped soon and was trying to get as much information so that we can ask the right questions.

Thanks so much!

raji

Get the number off the bottle of any vaxxes you get.  I would try to space them out, and get single shots as opposed to group ones.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge than I in this area will come along and make suggestions.

I think that in planning for travel to India, I would consider how I feel about things like hep A, typhoid, polio and maybe measles.

Is getting the number off the vax bottles for record keeping in cases of recalls or something? Please enlighten. Thanks!

hi! ds was fully vaxed until 9 months so recieved DTap, hib, hep b, rotateq etc. but he was not vaxed passed that time. We traveled to India for 1 month when he was 2 1/2 to visit relatives. He did get pretty sick for part of the visit, we were having problems with him not eating any of the food and that did not help him fight off viruses he caught along the way. So I suggest above anything, speaking from experience, bring vitamins, nutrition drinks, high dense foods like peanut butter-I couldn't get that there. More than anything you don't want your child to be going hungry if she gets sick. Ds pretty much only would eat chapti bread and plain white american style bread with jam, wouldn't drink the cows milk much either when there either. Despite his immune system being down from not eating much he did not catch any VPD illnesses while there. He got an ear infection from the respitory virus he had there, and that was the extent of it. He also got bitten by a couple mosquitos, despite it being january when we visited those things were still around. HE didn't get too many like our friends daughter who visited southern indian in july she came home to the states with dozens of bites. Not sure if i answered your question but if you want to chat more about it maybe post in the multicultural forum.

ETA: we were staying in Delhi and made a small two day trip to the Taj Mahal.

I think it is the lot number you want as well as the manufacturer name.  It is in case she has any adverse reactions, or if there is a recall.
