Morning Sickness Mamas

Okay, more like 24/7 sickness grossedout.gif

 

Mine has begun and if it's anything like last time, this is how it's going to be until around 14 weeks or so.  I was working full time last pregnancy and I worked alone 90% of the time, so as long as I could drag my butt out of bed and get myself to the office, I could essentially deal with things and it didn't matter if it wasn't pretty ;) 

 

This time around I have DD to think about and I'm already feeling guilty because we have missed out on two activities with her play group - a trip to the marine biology center yesterday (the thought of smelling sea creatures actually made me cry) and another meetup today.  But I do not want us to have to spend the rest of the summer at home. 

 

So, maybe we could use this thread to share our tips and tricks for getting through the yucky times!  I pretty much think I tried it all in my last pregnancy (to no avail) but you never know what we might learn from one another that could help ease things even a tiny bit.

 

The things that were the most beneficial, though nothing completely got rid of the sickies, was making sure I got a good night's sleep, forcing myself to eat little snacks all day long so my stomach was never empty (always kept a bag of raw almonds with me), and exercising.  That one was the hardest, because who feels like moving around when you're on the verge of hurling?!?!?!

 

I feel like I need to step it up though and try some new things so that I can be a present, functioning mom to my little lady

 

What have you ladies had the most success with?

I wonder who came up with the whole "morning" sickness thing? It's all day long. :P I keep eating fresh fruit and veggies all day to help keep my tummy from being empty. I was munching on a few pretzels, but then I broke my tooth this morning on one, so no more of that!

 

I don't think exercise is going to work for me at this point, since I can't move too much without puking. However, a fan or other cold air helps a lot, I've found.

B6 helps some women quite a bit. For me it is so/so. Unisom (the old formulation) is considered safe and works pretty well. It'll knock out, though. you can also try digestive enzymes to help speed up digestion.

With DD I carried around plastic bags, mints, and baby wipes in case I got sick somewhere. I tried everything under the sun. The only thing that stopped it for me was Zofran. You could try bringing mints, gum, sour candies, root beer candy, or ginger. Sometimes they'll help cover up any smells if you suck on them. Sipping on a cool drink can help sometimes, too. For me, it is easier to drink carbonated water than flat water for whatever reason. Flat water makes me feel sick if I'm pregnant.

I am not too sick as yet (totally worried about that, of course!) but I am queasy a lot of the time. I have found that eating before bedtime gets rid of the most terrible sickness and also exercising first thing. I had a horrific case of morning sickness last time around and was literally vomiting throughout in spite of medication. I hope that doesn't happen again, of course, though it would be very reassuring, right now.

 

I still have many food aversions from last time, too, including ginger, saltines, etc (all things I tried in the beginning but which I gtt very sick on!)

Having something with protein before bed has been helping me, too. It eliminates the mad dash to the kitchen to shove something down my throat before I puke in the morning.

I had horrible MS with my first child, "normal" - 1st trimester MS with my second and am very very paranoid this time around.  One of the main reasons I waited so long after our 2nd (she will be 4 1/2 when the baby is born) is the MS.  I am 5 weeks today and am just feeling a little off, not bad at all, but I am getting prepared. Here is my plan this time around:
 

Already doing:

Rice Crackers with Nut Butter or Cheese before bed, when I wake up in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning

B6 - started taking these at night and in the morning 25 mg

Probiotics
Hypnosis mp3s from a friend - I started listening to one every night at bedtime

 

For the future:

Sea Bands

Unisom

Ginger Candies

Many, many homeopathic remedies

 

Hopefully one of these will work!

In my last pregnancy I vomited every day from 6-34 weeks.  While I had to use medication, I found that what helped the most was to get ahead of the nausea -- to be proactive about doing the things that helped before I wound up in a nausea/vomiting spiral.  (For me this was taking zofran the instant I woke up, hah hah.)

Zofran was my best friend. My turd of a doctor (former doctor) wouldn't write the script and kept saying insurance doesn't cover it. I finally got the midwife to just write the script, and sure enough, it was covered. I suffered horribly for five months because the doctor was too lazy to help me get approval. If you're losing more than a few pounds or having trouble staying hydrated, make sure the doctor knows that it is NOT normal M/S. If they don't want to help, go somewhere else. I should have at that point, and I learned my lesson. Luckily hyperemesis isn't too common.

Anyone else finding eating really hard? I haven't actually thrown up yet, just constant nausea.  But I just don't want to eat anything at all, ever.  I force it down because my body needs it and because I feel a bit less nauseous on a full stomach, but it is really hard for me to eat anything at all.  Every bite is like, bluuurrgghhh DO NOT WANT!

hmm, I'm not so bad, though I find bad smells very offensive.  Kind of 'identify and destroy' response, but it hasn't made me hurl.

 

I think my way of eating has been helping with how I feel.  tons of fat, meat, veggies, dairy...  I eat what sounds good in the moment, which has been beans stir fried with butter and salt and pepper, a lasagna, and I want brussel sprouts, but there are preggos in my office that would have issues with the smell.

 

surely theres something that sounds attractive?  Strawberries?  blueberries? bacon? ice cream?  jello?  breakfast burritos?  artichoke hearts are delicious!

UGH!  It's not even that expensive as a generic these days.  So sorry you suffered needlessly for five months. greensad.gif There's no excuse for that kind of ignorance in a HCP.  My #1 fear with this surprise BFP is that the nausea/vomiting will be worse than last time and the zofran won't work (so far it is working just fine.)  I'm the breadwinner and I have to work.

Yes!  I've been trying to do that as well and it does make a difference.  Eating before bed is really the last thing I feel like doing but I can deal with some Greek yogurt or a few crackers with cheese. 

 

We really try to use natural or homeopathic remedies first in our family, and then move on to over the counter or prescription treatments as a last resort.  DD's pediatrician is also a homeopath so if things get really bad I'll give him a call and see what he suggests. 

 

Other than that, sipping ginger tea has been helping, and drinking seltzer water instead of plain water is much better for me.  I've also been upping my kefir intake to see if that makes a difference too.

I've not started any morning sickness yet.. would be wonderful if I didn't have any this time.  Last time it sucked!  Not a lot of throwing up but being queasy all day long and not being able to even think about parusing through the kitchen.  At the end I found what worked for me was something I found very counterintuitive.  I ate saltines all day and all night, like 15 -20 minute interval per cracker and any time I woke up.  If even a smidgen of hunger was felt, the nausea was quick to follow and I then I'd have to eat while nauseous which is one of the worst things, and I'd have to enjoy the rough seas for awhile.  This time, I'm going to be prepared and get a big box at costco and stash them around.  It did make for a lot of crumbs in the bed but now that we have a handheld vacuum, I think it'll be ok :P (I say all this on my way to go do an introduction, I'm still so early on, I'm nervous!)

I'm pretty sure I have a phobia of puking. I haven't done it since I was 8, and if I get really sick I just dry heave. This week has been the worst so far as far. I'm generally starving/full/heartburny/nauseous every day after lunch. During my last pregnancy eating helped a lot, but this time it feels like it will help, and then it doesn't. I have gotten some acupuncture, and I've been massaging the points on my wrist where she put the needles in my wrists. This is why the wrist bands are supposed to help. She mentioned she has some tacks (they're kinda like a bandaid with a really fine needle sticking out that you wear all the time), and I think I'm going to see if I can try those. During my last pregnancy I didn't dry heave during the ms phase, but I did during labor, so I'm hoping to have a tool to use during labor as well.

Bleeeeehhhhhh.  <-- my whine for today.  :)

 

I had bad all-day sickness with #1, very little with #2, and back to being bad for #3.  Ginger helps me immensely, but the problem is that I despise the stuff after a very bad association as a teenager.  If I spend the day out, I bring a bottle of ginger tea and a couple of horrible swigs every hour or so keep my belly happier.  Ginger candy doesn't seem to help much. The best so far was actually a bit of peeled fresh gingerroot about the size of a prenatal vitamin, swallowed like a vitamin. 

 

Eating protein regularly throughout the day keeps things from going crazy out of control.  I feel pretty bad in the morning until I've had at least 2 servings of protein.

 

I always get sick on raw carrots when I'm pregnant, so those are off the list.

 

Cool air is nice.  With #1 I had the a/c at 68 all summer, this time 78 is perfect... thank God because I don't know how I'd afford the utility bill again!

I'm one of those people that doesn't puke.  Ever.  I could count the occasions in my whole life on one hand, I reckon. 

 

Even when I am sooooo nauseated, and WISH I could puke, I don't.  

 

Anyway, this time round, my morning sickness is different than before.  I feel like I have food poisoning, all the time.  It's that really low in you gut, yukky, gurgly, diarrhea  type feeling.

I don't love it.

Me too.  I'm sure I threw up as a small child that I can't remember, but within memory I can only think of two sicknesses ever that included throwing up.  We'll see how long that lasts now that I am pregnant and feeling so nauseous.  My mom said it kept getting worse for her until about 10 weeks, so if that is true for me I am sure I will throw up.   We'll see.

Smells are really doing me in these days. My husband decided to make some longanizas the other day and I actually left the house it was so bad. I couldn't come back in, so I held my breath, opened all the windows, put a fan in my room to blow out the smell and poured bleach in all the dishes he'd used. About 25 minutes later, I could finally go back indoors! This part is so not fun. :P

In my previous pregnancies, I still never threw up.  I gagged, and retched, and carried on, but just never threw up!

Has anyone had success with Ginger pills?  I was thinking of getting some of those as well.  So far I am not feeling so bad - still taking the V6 and Probiotics in the morning, DHA, Vitamin D (my HCP recommended it) and Prenatal at night.  Getting ready to go and listen to that hypnosis mp3 again and go to sleep.
