How many shots for pertussis protection?

I was wondering how many shots are needed for adequate pertussis protection.? My son didn't get his until he was two years old and he had 3 dtaps. He is now 8. Everything I have read said 3 dtaps and then wait ten years for a booster...is this correct? And I know timelines need to be adjusted when you start vaxing. I want him to be protected with the least mat of shots.

Thank you!

3 doses is pretty good, but a fourth dose around the 4th birthday would be needed for optimal protection. Then, the 12 year old booster if you want.

Thank you for your response. I just want to clarify since my son is now 8 yes old and had his 3 doses of dtap at age 2...do I wait until he is 12 for the booster?

ooops - I didn't notice that he was already 8 now.  If you want him to have a good level of protection, then I'd get the Tdap booster now.  If you don't mind him being susceptible (since whooping cough isn't serious or dangerous for older kids), you could wait until 11 or 12 (the age that it's usually given).
