transplanting asparagus?

We have asparagus growing very well in a gross little plot next to the paint-peeling house. I worry a bit about toxins in the sandy soil, especially because DD like to eat them. I was thinking about transplanting them to something we build. Any one have ideas for someone who know nothing about gardening?

Asparagus crowns (the root part) are really sensitive, and really big and deep, IIRC. Google around for asparagus transplants, but if they have been in the ground for a few years it's going to be hard to transplant. I think you might do better if you buy new one-year old crowns and plant those, wait a year for them to start producing spears.
