Anyone in Longwood CSD (NY?)

Thread Starter

HI- just wondering if anyone has filed a religious exemption in my school district.  My daughter was accepted into the Universal Pre-K and they are asking for the NYS religious exemption form as well as a "letter from an elder" in my church.  I wouldn't be able to obtain that, so without saying much I hung up the phone and called Patricia Finn, the attorney, to get information about possibly retaining her.  A letter from her 'should' cover us but curious to see what others in my district have done..... Thanks! (Daughter and son never vaccinated, states in their medical record Religious Beliefs)

I'm not in your school district (I'm in Smithtown), but I will be filing a religious exemption soon to get my son into Kindgergarten for the 2012-2013 year.

Before you retain Patricia Finn you really need to contact Gary Krasner. He runs a group called Coalition for Informed Consent (CFIC) and helps parents write religious exemption letters (I belive there is a small fee involved).  Here's his contact info -

Good Luck!  And please come back and post if you do get your exemption!

wave.gif I'm in Longwood. While we do vax now, we were non-vaxers for several years and did not have any problems with our exemption. All you are required to submit is a completed state exemption form, which also contains the procedures for the school to follow. They may not ask you for any kind of "proof" (like a letter from your clergy) unless they feel your exemption letter doesn't demonstrate that your beliefs are sincere and religious in nature. And they must notify you in writing of their request for additional documentation.

I would simply submit the state form and not provide anything else unless they follow the procedures required of them by the state. Oh, and I agree with PP to contact Gary Krasner; he helped us several years ago and really knows his way around the exemption process.
