Threads featured on front page w- random models- why?!

When I log on to MDC I am usually brought first to the home page. I see now there are threads- regular threads that people have- that are transformed into snappy catchy  phrases with pictures of random people posing- why? It is another thing that makes mdc feel over exposed and less cozy in my opinion.

The MDC homepage is www.mothering.com/community. That is a general "homepage" that features articles, discussions, news, deals, has the "Who's Online" box, the "MotheringDotCommunity Stats" and most recent discussions, top posters, top posts, most active threads, etc. It's much the same as the homepage of Mothering.com where things are featured with titles and lead text and images. Homepages are quite common for sites and communities. It helps new people to the site see a variety of the content that is available and features new content that might otherwise be missed.
