Anyone ever buy an IKEA latex mattress?

Hi everyone--I used to post under a different name, but I can't find the log in information so I've made a new account. It's been a long time, anyway.

I have a quick question for those of you who have purchase latex mattresses from IKEA, specifically the Sultan Erfjord. We bought one today and a friend helped us get it home. It was enclosed in a solid cardboard box and that's it. No plastic around the mattress inside the box and no plastic outside the box. This really bothers me as I've always seen new mattresses wrapped in plastic. How do I know that this wasn't a returned mattress? I know IKEA has an exchange policy, but I paid lots of money for a new mattress, not one that someone has possibly slept on already.

So, my simple question is...how was your NEW Erfjord mattress packaged?

I would call them and ask about the packaging.  In reading their lit, it states that mattresses that are returned are "recycled" , not resold.  I was looking at the mattress you purchased, but have not yet bought one.  My concern was that sleeping on the latex might be hot- we live in a warm climate and I have heard people say that about latex mattresses.  My other concern was that if I bought the top of the line latex mattress at Ikea and didn't like it after sleeping on it for the thirty days ( or whatever they advertise)  that I could only exchange it but wouldn't get my money back.  Which would leave me in the lurch- if I don't like their best latex mattress and don't want a synthetic one , what to do?  I'd like to hear what you think of yours or if anyone else has one to give an opinion on.

We have an Ikea latex mattress - dunno which exactly anymore, but it's 5-6 years old.  Ours was rolled and wrapped in plastic.  

I *think* that, unless you purchased yours out of the 'seconds' section, it would be new, no worries.  Was the cardboard weird - did it have stickers/printed stuff on it?  The packaging sounds unusual, but Ikea does do unusual/creative packing variations so that wouldn't really alarm me initially.  IMO - what you describe seems like it would allow for the outgassing of the mattress to happen while in storage at the store instead of your home.  I haven't been to an ikea in awhile either so I don't know how they're packaging things these days - but I always found they change it up a lot.

I bought that exact mattress yesterday.  It was rolled and wrapped in plastic.

we bought a futon from them, not from the seconds section, and the box was stapled and twined shut. Inside was a dented, scratched futon frame covered in dog hair and paint. The kicker was that it wasn't even the right futon! They told us it was our fault for not opening the box in the store to verify the contents before we left. The whole experience still makes me angry. Anyway, this to say that just because you got it off the shelf of "new" ones, does NOT mean it wasn't a return.

WHAT??! Because everyone opens up giant futon boxes before they leave the store... You never know, they might have put a bunny in the box instead. I'm mad for you!!
