hypothyroidism and celiac

Does anyone have both?  Which diagnosis did you get first?  Did the second diagnosis and treatment affect your first?

I've had hypothyroidism for years but it has never been stable.  I have lots of level changes and therefore dosage changes for my Synthroid.  I've also never been asymptomatic.  The latest endocrinologist thinks I may have celiac disease because I have iron deficient anemia.  I was just hoping to hear some first hand experiences in dealing with both.

Hmm I have both. I think the celiac came slightly before. I was very very sick. They say if you have one autoimmune disorder chances are high you have 2 or 3 others. They just go hand in hand.

As for treatment they're not related at all. One is to stop eating gluten and your synthroid should be gluten free and you continue to take it. Hashimoto people's levels tend to bounce so that's normal.

Oh, I know the treatments themselves aren't related I just wondered if you noticed an improvement in one when you began treating the other.  Thank you for responding.  It is good to know I'm not the only one.

Hmm I highly suspect I have celiac due to genetic factors and symptoms -- not officially diagnosed though.... I started a GF diet a couple years ago, took a break from it while pregnant, then went back to it. I feel improvement being GF but I am not 100%. I started thyroid meds (dessicated thyroid) just a few weeks ago, but have yet to feel any improvement from that. My levels were only borderline but I was/am very symptomatic. I don't see them affecting each other in any way though... IDK still trying to figure it all out & almost suspect there is another missing link or something that's preventing me from feeling normal...

My sister. Hypothyroid diagnosed first. About 4-5 years later, it was her endocrinologist that noticed her meds dose was enough for a 200lb man!  One of the test she ran was for celiac and it was positive. Her body wasn't absorbing the meds (and probably foods!) the way it should be because of the damage.

Now, a few years later, her meds are in normal range for her size and keep her #s where they should be.

Try and get more food based iron (like floradix and/or freeze dried raw liver capsules) your body will tolerate them better then horse pills as it heals.

My DS. We found the autoimmune thyroid condition when he was 3.5. Then, after reading here about the likelihood of other autoimmune conditions, especially celiac, I asked for him to be tested, and there it was. That was when he was 5.5. I always wonder which one tryly came first, but I suspect celiac. He was a very, very fussy infant. Myself, I also have the same condition, and I take ridiculous quantities of levoxyl - 175mcg plus 1 tab of armour! When I was pregnant my dose went up to 275mcg... I am not celiac (even had an endoscopy to be sure), however, I have been eating gluten free for 2 years without change in my thyroid requirements.
