If you CD and use woolies...(cross-posting in Diapering)

what do you dress your newborn baby in? I mean, right after birth. I am planning a homebirth in case that makes a difference. Maybe hospitals wouldn't be too CD friendly so sposies would be the way to go at least while there.

Do you use sposies until the meconium is gone or go straight to the CDs? If you go with CDs from the beginning, do you put the woolies on right away, or do you wait until the meconium is all gone? Is it more messy in the beginning, making using woolies a bit of pain because they would need to be handwashed often?

You'd think I'd know these things since this is my 2nd CDed, woolied, homebirthed baby but I honestly can't remember what I did before. Maybe I just used a diaper and no cover.

... with dd we used sposies in the hospital because they were free.

when you say woolies, you mean a prefold or a fitted with a wool cover or longies or something?

that's what we did with our newborn, used those kissiluvs fitteds and the wool cover.  i doubt that anything would leak, and they're small enough to fit well.  prefolds, too.

did you make some tiny newborn covers?  or buy some?  if not, you could always cut up a felted wool sweater and make just 2 newborn sized ones, that way you wouldn't have to worry about them not fitting.

I use fitteds and knit soakers. No NB size stuff for me. My last babe was over 9 lbs. so NB size would be a waste. I looked at the sposies at the store today. The NB size say they go up to 10 lbs. That would be pointless for us. lol.gif I didn't buy any because I wouldn't need 30-40 diapers if I decided to use them for the first couple of days.

yeah... dd was 10 pounds at birth, so i get that.  i know you'll have luck with the prefolds, and the knitted soakers don't have to be tight to work.  i guess if you're worried about staining the prefolds, you could make/buy some flannel liners or buy some flushable liners.. they come in handy if you ever have to use rash cream, too.  i bet the meconium would come out with some sun exposure, too, but i haven't tried that. it's pretty thick, it won't leak through to your woolies, i wouldn't think.

maybe that's the best thing about hospital birth!  free sposies that you don't really need!!

I'm not worried about the diapers getting stained. I expect that. I am wondering if my woolies will get poo on them, from leaking, I guess. I don't want to have to hand wash the soakers every day because they have poo on them.

If you use a well-fitting fitted, you shouldn't have too much of an issue with leaking.  My LO did not have explosive meconium, but I would not want to clean it from woolies.  If you do go with CDs from the start, I would use a homemade fleece liner in the diaper so it catches most/all of the meconium and I would skip the woolies until the meconium passes.
