Homeschooling for K and in NY

Hey there! We are about 95% sure we are homeschooling our son this year. We live in NY (not NYC - in the Hudson Valley region) and I was just wondering others experiences with homeschooling in NY? Also maybe some websites to go to for curriculum? What do you guys do for social interaction? He's an only child (hopefully for not much longer!) and we have no friends with kids. He's done T-ball in the spring and he'll be doing soccer too as well, but that's it.

Thanks so much! <3

Hi! I grew up in the Hudson Valley, though I wasn't homeschooled. A good friend of mine was, and I was pretty jealous.

We're going to begin officially homeschooling next spring. One of the first things I did was went to our department of education webiste to find out the homeschool laws of Vermont. Then we started researching the different methods and chose one we thought would fit our family the best. We chose the Charlotte Mason method and will be following Ambleside Online, but adding in our religious materials. It fits us well since we're on a budget and most of the books are available online for free. Since their year 1 is geared towards age 6, I have joined the yahoo groups for year 0 and year 0.5. For social activities we belong to a local meetup group, dance class, library story hours, soccer, and we're just about to help begin a local homeschool group. HTH!

Luckily, (if your child isn't six yet), you won't have to do anything with the state this year.

We live and homeschool in Syracuse and haven't had any trouble meeting other homeschoolers.

For curriculum, we use a mix of different things. My ten year old is entering sixth grade this year. He's finishing Saxon Math 6/5 and will be starting Saxon Math 7/6. He and my seven year old are both doing All About Spelling and Growing With Grammar in their respective levels. The ten year old, seven year old and five year old are all doing Story of the World book II together for history. We'll be studying earth science and astronomy as well.

For my five year old (turning six in September), I ordered the Memoria Press kindergarten package. I've never used a boxed curriculum before, but we're so busy lately that I needed the pre-planned lessons laid out for me.
