sleeping while on vacation

So, I always have ONE way to get DS to sleep at a time, and for 6 weeks or so now I have been singing and rocking him in a chair until he falls asleep. Problem is, we are going to vacation for a whole month and there is no rocking chair there. Any ideas? I don't want to go back to nursing to sleep and even if I did I don't think it would work, since LO has been weaning himself lately (or something, either way, the reason the rocking started was that he stopped nursing to sleep). Any ideas?

I have a DS that is rocked to sleep and we sometimes travel.  I have 2 approaches - sometimes if he is really tired, I sit in a regular chair and read and then sway in the chair a bit.  If I think I need a bit more movement, I actually take him into a dark bathroom, turn the fan on, and stand swaying side to side.  It's getting pretty old because DS weighs 38 pounds, but I do what I can to get this guy to sleep!

Since you are going for an entire month, could you consider getting a folding rocking chair? I think I would consider that for me if it was a whole month! Maybe you could order one and have it delivered to your vacation spot?  Something like this:

An exercise ball can work as a substitute rocker on vacation, just pack it flat & don't forget the pump! It's also an exciting 'toy' for a child in a hotel room or cabin (or you can stash it in the bathtub during the day). A friend of mine travelled with hers while her baby was in the 'must be rocked to sleep' phase and it worked perfectly, it's a bit of a bouncy movement instead of a true rocking, but it packed flat & light.

I would try just lying together.  This is what I did with my older 2 b/c I felt it was a good precurser to my ultimate goal of them lying alone :)

with my DS1- we went on vacation when he was 9.5 months old and there was no rocker.. so i layed in bed with him and nursed him, (he would not nurse to sleep) and then DH walked him around the room. That actually got him to sleep QUICK!

With DS2- we went on vaca when he was 6 months old, and I bought a folding rocking chair to take with us.

Does the place you are staying have a porch swing?

My two were horrible sleepers on vacation. At home, we could tuck our oldest into bed and leave the room and he would go to sleep, but in a hotel, he wanted to play since we were still in the room. We went on vacation when he was right at 3 and his brother was 4ish months. We had to walk them both around the hotel property in carriers(and ride the ferry across the river and back... that was more for mommy and daddy.... we went across the river, got a beer to go and by the time we were back at the hotel, the kids were asleep). My oldest son would ride in the Ergo on me and the youngest would ride in the Mei Tai on daddy (he would want to nurse if on me, but when we got back to the room, I would nurse him... the walking was more for the oldest to sleep)... Good luck mama!!
