16 Month Old DS Loves books! How to keep him interested - toys, games, new book ideas??

DS2 is 16 months old and LOVES books.  Each night after bathtime, he goes to a little basket that we have in the boys room that is filled with books, picks one out and runs over to give it to me.  He then plops down and is anxious for the story to begin.  We go through 6 or 7 books each night!  I'm beyond excited about this as DS1 was interested but not near as much as DS2 is and I want to keep this going and make sure it's not a phase! ;)

Ideas? Suggestions?  Even Christmas ideas?  We have a large selection of books from the touch and feel kind (some good Usborne books), to Sandra Boynton hardback, etc.,

DS loves Sandra Boyton, but I see you have a selection of those.  He likes the Fisher Price Little people books.  They have zoo, town, counting, etc.  Some have flaps, others have just pictures.  We have several of the Dr Seuss board books.  We had to work up to sitting through the whole story (those are loooong books), but now he enjoys them.

One thing we do is hit the library once a week.  We have a wonderful childrens library and he like to go look at books.  We check out 3 or 4 and it's a nice way to find new authors.

I give DS  book at naptime/bedtime and he reads in bed.  He also has a selection of car books for reading in the car seat.

I found a set of waterproof books at Target.  We take them to the pool, the water table and the bath.

Seconding the library visits.

Also, I would not have guessed this, but my kid (20 months) is a BIG fan of the kinds of picture books that just have lots of pictures on the page and labels--like ABC books, or books of animals with the picture names. He often will choose those over a story book. He likes to name the pictures. He also likes to tell you the sounds each animal makes.

yup, we're huge fans of those too.  some titles (we've had several) are the DK publishing ones, My First Word Book (dk has a bunch of the my first x books, all are good) and the Big Book of Bugs/trains/whatever.

we didn't like the Priddy (author) ones very much at all, they were a bit sexist (as in, one of the pages showed people with different occupations.  the only female was a "nurse," while the other people were men with the occupations of mail carrier, fire fighter, etc.)

DK puts lots of effort into not using trite stereotypes.

The library is great for adding variety without buying a ton of books.

My DD really enjoys books with animals, especially making the animal sounds. I try to have a wide variety, some longer ones like the full size Dr. Suess books, some really short and small board books, some touch-and-feel, some really simple ones with just a picture or two per page as she learns those and then will "read" them to me by flipping through and telling me the word for each picture, some soft books, some waterproof ones, etc. I like to have some that she can be really rough with and others that are for reading together so I can make sure she isn't ripping them. I also just make sure I am always on the lookout for books on sale as you can get some great bargains if you keep an eye out.

I will have to look for the waterproof books.  DS2 loves bath time and that would be a great addition to his 'water play'. lol.gif

We are at the library every week or so, so my DD gets to try out a wide variety of books!

She really likes the ones with the simple pictures of animals, etc. too.

Some of the storybooks she likes best are Good Night Gorilla, Go Dog Go, the Miss Spider series, and Curious George. Although, with George, she mostly just likes to look at the pictures. Oh, and some of the Little Golden Books - Mister Dog, the Saggy Baggy Elephant, the Little Red Hen, and the Jolly Barnyard come to mind.
