Teen/Young Adult Reads...

I have been reading a lot of Teen/YA novels lately and loving them!  They are a great reprieve from grad school reading.   

These are the ones I have read so far:

Twilight series

The Book Thief

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

The Hunger Games Trilogy

Wolves of Mercy Falls Trilogy

Speak

Does anyone have any other recommendations of some good teen/young adult books?

John Green is terrific. I liked Paper Towns more than Looking for Alaska. 

Meg Rosoff writes beautiful, moving books. Try anything she's written. 

For a fantasy series that seems to have dropped off the radar, I enjoyed Garth Nix's trilogy, Sabriel, Liriel and Abhorsen. 

Feed by M.T. Anderson is thought-provoking. His Octavian Nothing books are completely different, not easy to read (they are written in an 18th century vernacular) and fascinating. Since you liked The Book Thief, you might enjoy Octavian Nothing. Different wars, but similar life and death and liberty struggles. 

Since you liked Twilight, I highly recommend Sunshine by Robin McKinley. Personally, I think it's a much better treatment of the vampire trope, but even if you disagree, it's a great story. She's an award-winning author and has lots of other titles you can try. 

And that reminds me of McKinley's husband, Peter Dickinson. He is brilliant, and again, there are too many titles to mention. He writes for adults as well.

do you know about the printz awards?  the books selected are usually pretty amazing. 

i also try to read the newbery winners, too.

I love the YA genre too! I agree with the pp about the Printz awards. This year's winner was one of my favorites *Ship Breaker*.

Saving Franchesca, The Piper's Son, and Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta (the first two go together, but JR is a stand alone novel)

Hex Hall by Rachael Hawkins (it has a follow up called Demonglass, but I haven't read it yet)

Life As We Knew It, The Dead and the Gone, and This World We Live In by Susan Beth Pfeffer

I discovered YA fiction when I read the Twilight series.

A lot of them are very good! I like the fact that the violence is limited and they are not trashy.

Here are some I liked:

The Blue Girl by Charles De Lint (part of the Newford series which is not all YA)

The Painted Boy by Charles De Lint

Tithe and Ironside (part of a Modern Faerie Tale sereis) by Holly Black

Howls Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr (she wrote an entire series but I did not read all of them)

Also liked the Percy Jackson series,not as much as my son does, but they are still fun.

I've heard good things about the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. My son (13) tried the first book and found it boring, but I might try reading it myself since I like Faerie Literature.

Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison.  British.  Hysterical.

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han.  It seems to be loved by my patrons.

Wicked, Lovely  by Melissa Marr.   Dark, Riveting Fairies.

Kelly Armstrong  does teen vampires and she does them well.  

A Great and Terrible beauty - have not read it but it gets rave reviews.
