was just reading thread http://www.mothering.com/community/forum/thread/443382/best-burping-method-arguement on best way to get baby to burp- that one's closed so here's my two bits'th
If you look at a diagram of abdominal anatomy such as the ones here http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2007/08/01/health/adam/8606Normalabdominalanatomy.html and here http://catalog.nucleusinc.com/imagescooked/3600W.jpg you will see that there is a part of the stomach [to the right as we are looking at it], that has an upward bulge at the top. since gas is lighter than liquid it always rises, and it collects in this bulge, because the stomach exit upwards into the oesophagus [to the left as we are looking at it], is lower.
So for the baby this gas collection bulge is on his or her LEFT. So if you LEAN THE BABY OVER TO THE LEFT, that should bring the stomach's exit higher than this bulge, and some of that air should be able to exit. I'd suggest slow rhythmic leans a very little forward and quite a lot down to the left, to give the baby several opportunities to burp up the air.
