migraines

I need some mama advice please.

Long time migraine sufferer but they have gotten SO bad with this last pregnancy and now BRUTAL with nursing. At least 5 days a week, I have a real honest migraine. I went to my doctor to ask for medicine that is safe. She said I can take... TYLENOL! Omg. That just doesn't cut it. She says not to try any herbal anything because there isn't any proof on whats safe and whats not. She said she understands if I want to keep nursing, but that she wont be prescribing me anything because nothing is safe at all. She said my choices would be to suffer or to stop nursing. I brought in the list from kellymom.com and she said her info says nothing. is. safe. :(

She asked me to think about whether or not I want to continue nursing or not. Her view is that if I can't function 5 days a week, I'm missing out on my baby and I will regret it later. She breastfed her babies as well, so she's not trying to push formula.

Does anyone know of a secret medicine out there that I can show her is safe???? I'm feeling slightly tempted to stop nursing to get some relief from these awful days...

Have you called infantrisk.org? I'd talk to them first.

I don't know what type of migraine medication you'd be looking at, but sumatriptan for example is classified as L3 ("moderately safe") and Propranolol L2 ("safer") - and the AAP categorises them both as "maternal medication usually compatible with breastfeeding."  The Infant Risk Center should be able to give you information to discuss with your doctor.

I'm sorry you're in this position :(.  I understand how debilitating migraines can be.  Good luck!
