Maple Syrup Question

I bought a large 4L jug of maple syrup. I didn't refrigerate after opening (I think last time we had a large jug we had an extra refrigerator). I went to top up our small glass jar we keep in the fridge and the stuff in the large jug has large "globs" in it.....it will be smooth running, then this gelatinous glob will come through.

It appeared at one point that there was this thing almost like a leaf in it with a gelatinous glob around it, but even after fishing all of that stuff out, it's still globby on occassion. I've used the smooth-running parts a few times, but I'm starting to think that's not a good idea.

Question: Do you think I could filter then re-boil in an attempt to save it?

From now on, I will store it more carefully- glass jars in the fridge and freeze a large portion too.

According to the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association, unopened maple syrup will keep indefinitely, but it must be refrigerated once opened. As for mold, the MMPA says, "If any harmless mold should form on the surface, merely bring the syrup to a slight boil, skim the surface, and pour into a clean container and refrigerate." We haven't tried this ourselves, and are reluctant to recommend it unless you know exactly what kind of mold you have and whether it is truly harmless. Do any of our readers have experience with this?

In addition to refrigerating opened maple syrup, the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers' Association recommends storing unopened maple syrup in a cool place. For long term storage, the Association says that maple syrup retains its flavor best when kept in the freezer (it will not freeze solid).

I may try filtering and re-boiling.....nothing to loose....
