Before I go out and buy the ingredients, can you check out this laundry recipe:

Homemade Laundry Powder
(Makes approximately 5 cups)

2 cups (finely) grated castile soap*
1 cup borax
1 cup baking soda
1 cup soda ash (washing soda)

(via soulemama.com)

and let me know if you think it will make residue on the diapers? Thanks!

might depend on your water. For ours  YES icky yucky residue that sluffs off in REALLY annoying sticky white flakes that rub onto EVERYTHING. I can't do any homemade that uses ANY kinda soap. THe clothes seem clean but add wet skin and rub and soad scum rubs onto everything.

that is what i use. i wash on hot and run an extra rinse though. and i use vinegar in the final rinse which really helps prevent buildup. but with those considerations, i really love it for diapers. any other detergent has left them smelly, but never had any smell with the homemade.

Castile soap will leave a build up if you do not rinse with vinegar. For a while I was washing my dipes with a similar mix minus the soda ash since I cant find soda ash locally. If I did not wash a second time with vinegar there would be build up and after a few washes my dd would get a diaper rash. Once I started doing a vinegar rinse it went away.

Sadly the vinager rinses did nothing to eleminate the soap scum.Too bad but homemade jsut does not work for us.
