Sending lots of good labor vibes!
My water broke! - UPDATE - Page 3
Thanks for all the well wishes and labor vibes!
So still no baby C. Here's the deal, my "water" broke on early Thursday morning followed by some completely painless contractions that were about 5 minutes apart. I called the midwife about an hour later to tell her what had happened. She said to call her when the contractions "had my attention" and weren't just rolling along. I didn't think I was in labor because it was way too easy, but anyway. So then we just played a waiting game. I had contractions all day, but the same as always...tightening and pressure, but no pain, though there were more of them. Nothing was really happening. We went to walk the mall (because there's A/C there) to get things moving, but the contractions would stop when we stopped walking.
Went home totally frustrated because I felt like I was on the clock because my water broke even though I thought there would have been more fluid and I hadn't really had any more leaks that day. She said the baby's head could be corking it not allowing more fluid to come out. That morning (around 2am when I first "broke" my water, I had obviously lost my mucous plug at the same time.
So I bounced on my ball when I got home from the mall and took the stairs two at a time. We also tried some other things, but I'll spare you the details. :) Each thing would work to get the contractions going, but they still didn't hurt AT ALL. Took a shower and decided to lay down and get rest. About 20 minutes later, I had VERY strong contractions with a lot of pain and they were very close together. Called the midwife and she said to call in 15-20 minutes if they were still there. They got more intense and the baby was pivoting or something at the same time. I could barely catch my breath, but was very excited and not scared (which I was pleased to discover). Dave filled the pool and called the midwife when I could no longer speak in btwn contractions. She got there quickly and I got in the pool. The contractions went away almost immediately.
They never came back. Well, contractions were there, but again, none needing my attention. We tried a few things and then decided that it was best just to try to sleep. We had a long discussion about what was going on and the more we talked, the more I think we know what happened. She said she's had a ton of women swear on a stack of bibles that there water broke and then she does things to help the labor to progress only to find out when they are pushing or are later in labor, that the water breaks...so it was not broken before. Now I definitely wasn't swearing on a stack of bibles that my water broke, but I did wake up rather wet. She asked if it could have been pee and I was sure it wasn't even though I know that's common. I haven't leaked once all pregnancy with sneezes or coughs so that doesn't make sense. She agreed. She said at the end of pregnancy, the discharge can turn extremely watery and increase in amounts and even drip down your leg. Only 10% of women have their water break BEFORE labor starts and usually those women go into labor pretty quickly once that happens. Not me. So btwn the total lack of painful contractions (except the 2 hrs earlier), the fact that no more fluid came out, the fact that I had definitely lost the plug thing, and that there was no real progress, we're thinking it was the plug coming loose with some fluid which indicates I am dilating. I had some earlier this week too, but was unsure. There was no doubting it was that this time. She said that the majority of women go into labor 24-72 hours after they lose the plug. So I'm less than 24-48 hrs from that.
We're going to test the fluid today to see if it's amniotic fluid, but really, the fluid is gone and I am very confident it wasn't my water breaking...which is great actually. Baby is doing great and she thinks (and now I agree) that the contractions that were painful and one on top of each other were the baby rotating. The baby is now in a very good position with the back over to the left and she can no longer feel the head and only the neck...so baby is on the way out. There's also more space below my ribs. I was anxious yesterday about labor not starting, but was fine otherwise. Once the strong contractions came, I was a little surprised how much they hurt, but I wasn't scared and I felt totally confident that I could do it. The whole experience left me even more confident about my ability to do this. Jenny (my midwife) was awesome and she told me not to worry that she had come out. She said I did everything right and she thinks the uterus is definitely doing something and baby will be here soon.
So, how's that for a novel? So basically, I'll probably know later today if it was amniotic fluid (which I HIGHLY doubt). If it was, we'll resort to other measures to get things started, but it really doesn't seem to be going that way. If it wasn't, I think we just wait for Baby C to come when he/she is ready. Jenny guesses it will be by this weekend. So exciting!!!!!! In the meantime, we're going with the theory that it was the mucous plug released with wetness related to the plug rather than breaking waters. Sounds like a good theory to me. :) So I'm dilating, I'm crampy, and I lost my plug for 100% sure...hopefully Baby C will be here soon. I'm going to walk and bounce on the ball to help the baby's head engage more to press on the cervix which will help me dilate faster. Baby's heart rate is great. I feel fine. All is good and progressing well and it does look like baby is coming before the due date.
Thanks for reading the novel and sorry if you were waiting on pins and needles to hear. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for the update. Sorry you had to go through all that and still no baby yet. Definitely take some time to rest up now that you know it's coming soon though.
And I have lost amniotic fluid before that wasn't pee...but it wasn't my water actually breaking all the way either. It happened to me yesterday in fact. So you are not crazy. Anytime us pregnant woman leak they try and convince us that we peed ourselves, which is not always the case (I never have).
I'll keep sending good vibes your way.
What a rollercoaster!!! I'm so happy everything is looking good and baby is doing well -- as frustrating as this must be for you!!! I'm glad you're feeling at peace with all this, too. I was so worried for you!! Definitely keep us posted, I for one cannot wait to hear that your baby has been born!!
