DD is 6 weeks old and gulps a lot of air when she nurses and has reflux. I have over active let down and have been doing the tricks on kellysmom.com (nursing from one side for several feedings, nursing with baby propped up to slow down flow, expressing a little milk, and I cut out dairy). When DD gulps air she needs to burp several times during a feeding and spits up a lot. She also gets the hiccups. This is becoming a problem because she can't fall asleep at the breast when this happens. I end up rocking her for 2 hours to get her to go to sleep and at 3 am this is not fun! Any tips on how to get her to not gulp so much air when she nurses? Also she acts like she wants to eat but then cries when I try to feed her. She has gained a normal amount of weight.

Gulping too much air
Subbing! It's the same way with my daughter (5 weeks old). Not strictly breastfeeding-related but it's been easier for us to get her to sleep at night since we started trying to maximize her awake-time during the day--when those little eyes finally open, we try to engage her for as long as possible and keep her awake. This may not be a totally kosher way of decreasing time awake at night, but it has worked for us. She still nurses at night and typically does not nurse to sleep, but will go to sleep shortly thereafter.

Thanks for all the advice. I have tried all the tips on kelly'smom.com including laid back nursing, sitting up to nurse etc. She is just a gulper! Her pediatrician gave DD a prescription for reflux medication and the last three nights have been great. I can tell when the medication is wearing off because she gets really fussy and screams. She still spits up a lot but she is much happier while doing it.
