Rubbing ears after swimming. What to do?

My 17 month old's ears started bothering him since we started swim lessons.  (he started rubbing them)

What should I do?

I was thinking of putting a little rubbing alcohol in the ear, but I read that is only for prevention.  Is that true, or will the alcohol work?  It's friday and we went swimming on wednesday.

thanks

My DS is just getting over a bad ear infection (that I am guessing was caused by swimming at the beach, though not positive)... His doctor said to use garlic oil in his ears and gave us a homeopathic remedy... he also gave us a prescription for antibiotics just in case it doesn't go away naturally, though I don't think we'll need to fill it. He said to use ibuprofen for the pain (we have just been giving it to him at night because he can't sleep otherwise).

I'd see about earplugs for the future lessons.
