How does EC work?

My 4-month-old DD always has a red bottom.  I have tried different brands of pocket diapers and pre-folds.  I have even tried Pampers, but they give her an even worse rash.  So even though I never really considered EC before, now I am thinking about it.  I just don't want my entire day to revolve around pee and poo.  Can anyone explain to me how it works?  Right now she is taking a nap completely naked, laying on a towel sleeping.gif.

I haven't really done it hardcore, but there's an EC subfurum (natural family living-diapering-Elimination Communication).
