how do you find a midwife?

We aren't even TTC at this point in time but df and I have agreed that when the time comes, we want to go the homebirth route. I've been a little worried, though, because I'm not sure how we would go about finding a midwife (especially one we're comfortable with). I'm assuming in places where homebirth is illegal, midwives aren't exactly listing themselves in the yellow pages, you know?

I've considered getting into contact with doulas and looking into whether or not they have any names they could share with me. Another idea I've had is to go to LLL meetings in our area (which would be beneficial for me, anyways, as a future first time nurser) and making connections with more likeminded moms in our area who may have some resources.

I guess I'm just wondering what others have done while searching for midwives. :)

Start working with whatever consumer support organizations are in your area. If there is like a Georgia Families for Midwifery or something like that, join up. This will also give you the chance to write letters when needed and work on changing the laws in your area. Doing a bit of work like that makes it very easy to find midwives once your time comes because you will have all the hook-ups already in place.

Definitely word of mouth. Going to LLL meetings or getting involved in HB support groups would be a great start; you can also post here on MDC in the GA "tribe" asking for recommendations, or do a search for previous threads on this topic.

I see that you live in GA, and am wondering what part of the state you are in. I am in the Atlanta area, and was able to find several homebirth midwives within an hours drive or so. I am happy with the one I chose, though I havent given birth yet. I began by googling "homebirth Atlanta" and went from there...

I found a few good links in the 'tribes' sections this morning, so I'll look into those. I've also been trying to check out LLL's website for GA but it wasn't working properly earlier. I'll try again later.

I hadn't tried googling yet. :) I just assumed that because attending a home birth is illegal in GA, midwives may not want to put their information out there in that obvious of a way. If that isn't the case and it's easier than I'm imagining, that will be even better.
