To be held in Washington, DC in July 2012 (but for those with a special interest in addressing the supposed circumcision/HIV link, it's never too early to start planning arguments and strategy).

The return of the International AIDS Conference to the United States in July 2012 represents a significant victory for public health and human rights.

The selection of Washington, DC, as the AIDS 2012 venue is also significant as it is home to key players in the global response to AIDS, including the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator (which directs PEPFAR – President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), the National Institutes of Health and the World Bank.

One idea might be for U.S. circumcision-opponents to use this conference as a milestone and treat other opportunities to present arguments against circumcision-as-a-HIV/AIDS-preventative to policymakers and regulatory agencies, as preparation and groundwork leading up to this event.

A two-pronged approach of being prepared to table fact-based and carefully researched objections at the actual conference (in addition to any protest activities planned), and informing U.S. policymakers and regulatory agencies, through their respective community consultation and public submission processes, of the deficiencies with the conference itself (e.g. it gives undue prominence to a single disease, it attracts and becomes a focal point for those with commercial interests and other agendas etc), might be indicated.
